Music at St. Nicolas Church

"Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD"

Psalm 95

As our Worship page shows, we enjoy a rich variety in our worship that needs the support of good musicians. Over the years, St. Nicolas has been blessed with a strong musical tradition which continues to flourish.

Many of our services are supported by a strong robed choir. At present there is a regular membership of over 20, with ages ranging from 8 to 80+. Under the leadership of their director, Jenny Ball, the choir sings a wide range of traditional and modern music. A highlight of the year is the annual choir weekend in August to sing at Bridlington Priory in East Yorkshire.

Our church boasts a fine three manual organ, which is played regularly by our organist Anthony Newborough. Anthony and Jenny are assisted by an organ scholar, Lawrence Caldecote, a music student currently studying at Coventry University. Two of our younger choir members are progressing well with their organ studies.

As well as the choir, we have our Singing Group and their supporting musicians. The Group specialise in leading the congregation in modern worship songs at our Family Services and other special occasions. John Hitchcock leads the group which meets to rehearse and pray weekly.

Outside our Sunday services, "Music at St. Nicolas" is series of concerts by mainly local musicians held throughout the year. These have included choir concerts, organ recitals and instrumental ensembles. For details of recent and forthcoming concerts, see our Events page.
